|07:31 am - A much more expanded MY GOD LIVEJOURNAL WHAT HAVE YOU DONE note retaining Old Man McGucket just for |
the hell of it
Holy bubble bursts, Batman, but LiveJournal just ate itself.
That new redesign (seriously log out and see it if you haven't, then clear the hell out of your cookies), optimized for your pad's protection, is an abomination unto God and Tim Berners-Lee. You log in and are gleefully informed that you can "promote" your post to that very front page for some amount of tokens? Tokens! Whee! We're at the arcade, kids! Who's up for Skee-Ball?
Thankfully they've retained, for the time being, the
?style=mine tag which works on most URLs and the cookies seem to be respecting it. Should they ever drop that, though, I think we'd need to hop over to Dreamwidth Street.
But I bin on since aught-three! Old Man McGucket! Sittin' on a bucket!

Agreed. If they drop the tag....I will pick up my torch and wield it.

Can they promote my page to a different site where people actually go now?
(No reflection on the good Mr. Spatch's posts, of course.)

At this point I am composing posts strictly on Dreamwidth and crossposting to LJ. Most of my friendlist is still LJ-only, so every couple of weeks weeks I import comments back to DW just so I know where they went, but it still works better for me than operating solely within the new, counterintuitive, tabletized LJ. Alas.
P.S. I like skeeball!
oh! how do you import comments from LJ to DW?

|(Link)|how do you import comments from LJ to DW?
Go to your Dreamwidth profile page. You'll see the usual set of drop-down menus: Create, Organize, Read, Explore, Shop.
Under "Organize," select "Import Content." You will need to choose a service from which you wish to import content (in this case, LiveJournal), then enter your username and password on that service
You will then be presented with an array of options for import: Profile Data, Friends, Custom Security Groups, Journal Entries, Journal Comments, Tags, Icons. If your profiles and friendlist composition differ substantially between DW and LJ, you may wish to leave the first couple of options alone. "Journal Comments" is self-explanatory. When you select it, it will automatically select your entries, tags, and filters, since it's hard to import comments onto a post that doesn't exist and it's just polite not to screw up the filters and tags in the process. This should not
result in duplicate entries if you've been consistently cross-posting to LJ from DW. It will result in LJ-comments being copied over to their relevant DW-posts. I should warn you that icons don't always import from LJ and link formatting sometimes goes weird, but it's never screwed up text that I've been able to perceive. Overall, I find it a very useful feature. Be prepared for it to take a while if you're importing content for the first time, though. There may be a lot for DW to catch up on.
Or you could just read this FAQ at Dreamwidth
, which does a more concise job of explaining than I just did.
Best of luck!
