10:01 pm - Farewell and adieu to ye fair Spanish ladies
After showing a zillion Foghorn Leghorn cartoons, the Somerville showed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and I sat in my favorite seat and had a great time. Then I get home and oh hey Jaws is showing on Turner Classic Movies! We're already a half hour in, I missed The Jaws ShotTM (the little Kintner boy is already deadified) but I just noticed that Matt Hooper pretty much shows up at the 0:30 mark. And Quint's gonna show up in a very few minutes. (EDIT: Fuck. He already showed up, didn't he. God damn, Spielberg, how the hell did you accomplish SO MUCH in thirty goddamn minutes?!)

What a great day for movies!

(The midnight movies this year at the Sommavill are great. One week they'll be doing a double feature of Beach Blanket Bingo and Wet Hot American Summer. That's freakin' brilliant. There'll be a Wizard of Oz/Princess Bride double feature, two Chuck Norris movies for those of you who can't get enough of those jokes (hanging out in the Barrens, are ya?) and The Big Sleep one week and the immortal classic ROADHOUSE so we can have a Patrick Swayze Christmas in July! And Dazed & Confused, and The Big Sleep and apparently lots of cartoons.)

The Big Sleep?! Bogey?!

Oh man! If they'd only show Casablanca, I'd be in HEAVEN! I've always wanted to see it on a big screen!

The Brattle shows that every year, usually around Valentine's Day. The tradition goes all the way back to the 50s when the theater did a Bogart retrospective during Harvard exams. The "Cult of Bogie" formed on campus and spread to other college campuses. Bogart at that point was long gone; that resurgence helped make him the icon he is now.

Interestingly enough, Quint's USS Indianapolis speech was spliced together from two separate takes on two separate days. On one of those days he was stinking drunk.

I like to play spot the sobriety when I watch it.

Brush with fame:

I went to college with the got-eaten Kintner kid (Jeff Voorhees) in the 80s.

Now if you just pipe down for a minute, son, you'll understand what I'm tryin' to tell ya (get up there, son, you're trippin' over your own feet) and if, I say if you think you can just stand there jawin away at folks, that's talkin, son, not listenin, and if you're not listenin, son (you're fallin all over yourself again there, gotta be more careful, I say) and if you're not listenin, son, then you're not gonna get anywhere, now, are ya?

Nice kid, but he's gotta learn when to shut his trap.

So funny, even though it's the same schtick every. single. time.

The best cartoon we saw was the one featuring a stray dog who was trying to win the heart of a southern plantation owner but kept mentioning things like "Yankee Pot Roast". The owner already has a dog, so the stray tries to usurp him by painting him as a traitor (dressing him up in a Yankees uniform, for instance) and at one point is almost caught in a trap (as he pretends to be a dying Confederate soldier):

STRAY: And say goodbye to my dear old aunt in Boston...
SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN: BOSTON?!
STRAY: ...South Boston!

Big reaction from the locals.
