Today is also the first of July, which means a June monthly pass is no good. You can add the next month's pass to your card well before the start of the month, of course (and a bit afterwards, too) but this was the first time my travels had recently took me to a card-purchasing place. It was also 7 in the morning and I had to go to work, and I was running around trying every single machine.
"Oh, yeah," the guy in the booth said, after noticing my fifth attempt. "They're not takin credit cards this morning. You're trying to get a pass, right? I'll let you in." Seeing as how I didn't have any cash on me, I was exceedingly grateful and also slightly relieved, because if there wasn't no guy in the booth around to let me in, I'd have had to sneak through myself.
The guy left his booth, walked over to the wide-body Charlie gate, and opened it from behind. I walked through and the gate protested LOUDLY BZZT BZZT BZZT FARE EVASION FARE EVASION FARE EVASION but we didn't care. He was being helpful and that was good.
I'm just glad this time around, the first of the month came on a Sunday. If July 1 had been tomorrow and the machines had decided to stop taking credit cards, there would have been some Serious Kerfuffling going on.
Oh, and speaking of non-kerfuffles, I was not awakened last night by three armed policemen busting down my bedroom door thinking my name was Liam and that I had a gun. I consider that progress. (What amazes me, though, is that it's been a year already.)
