|12:07 pm - DRIVE A SPIKE THRU MIKE|
Here's a fun one. One of our Boston radio stations recently changed its format from Stuff Spatch Wouldn't Listen To (Star 93.7, by the way) to "Mike." Yes, we've turned our cranks to Frank, only instead of Frank, it's Mike. One of those freeform DJ-less stations. Anyway. They invited regular listeners to call in and voice their opinions about the change. So one of the station's listeners, she called to chat, and as you can see from the post to the Wicked Good Conference, they turned her words back on her:
Last Saturday they broadcasted a number to call and critique the format. So I gladly called to tell them how I feel. Now that's classy! Way to go, Mike!
My statement goes like this:" I just wanted to say that I do not like the new format at all. The music is great, some of which I haven't heard in years...But, the station now lacks personality. The announcements are obnoxious. I really miss fast Freddie,Ralphie & Karen and Lady D in the afternoon. I just love 'em! Bring back the dj"s, I don't like this."
When I called in the message said they may use our comments on air. I hung up, I thought, Well they certainly won't use my comment on the air. Well, this morning, I thought I heard my voice on the station. I did! But MIKE93.7 fm took parts of my message and made it sound positive..I heard," The music is great, some of which I haven't heard in years. I just love 'em"
That fucking sucks. Real Ultimite Slime. I can't believe they twisted your words like that.
Oh, those weren't my words -- I wouldn't have called a radio station I don't listen to. But the actual listener, yeah, it sucks her words were twisted like that.

I'm trying to imagine radio station employees gathered around the boardroom table discussing the fact that they've been hetero-normative. And it keeps turning into a bad (read: unfunny ((read: normal)) ) SNL sketch.
Out here we get jack. I mean, "Jack 93.1 FM."
How odd... "Jack" has also made his way to the Pacific North West on 96.5 (Formerly "The Point", formerly "K-ROCK", formerly "Your FM Country Station"). What a disturbing trend! Automation disguised behind a simple hue-mon name, getting rid of the actual hue-mons along the way
oh, Jack lives in Dallas now too. I didn't even notice that before posting about it below. I don't mind Jack, though. At least it's not Clear Channel.
Austin has Bob, but it's acquired DJs lately. Sort of. They still don't tell you what most of the songs are, of course. And the constant ads fill in little details about "Bob" doing various Austin things.
enh, that's not surprising to me. slimy, but not surprising.
My gawd... this... THIS is EXACTLY the type of apocolyptic future that Arnold Schwartzeneger was trying to warn us about! We need to form a resistance NOW!
OH MY GOD I LOVE YOUR HOWARD BEALE ICON AND WANT TO STEAL IT. <3 <3 <3 <3 you have the coolest taste in everything ever.
p.s. Dallas recently got one of those stations too, called Jack. Conspiracy afoot.
One good thing about Jack in Dallas is that Mom and I saw Joan Jett, the Eyeliners and the Spin Doctors for free (plus $10 for parking) during my last visit to DFW. We didn't even have to listen to the station; a coworker of Mom's told her about the show.
That line-up accurately reflects the consciously schizo station format, I suppose.
Howard Beale is instant processed God!
I don't want to sound like an asshole but did you expect anything less? It's like those movie commericals where they edit a reviewer's article to make the movie sound like something everybody want to see.

I don't get this trend. There was a station my wife listened to all the time (106.3 I think) up in NH. She loved the station and the DJs and entered lots of contests. Then one day she turned it on and all they played was REM's 'It's the End of the World As We Know It' over and over for 24 hours. And know they're known as, as you say, Frank. As a result, it's just boring. She listens only to 98.5 now, whatever that station is. John Lander I think is the morning DJ.
Does this really build loyalty?

The same thing happened a few years ago in Minneapolis. "The Edge" was a reasonably popular alternative station. Then one day that REM song started playing and didn't stop for two days. At the end, 93X came on the air and started playing metal.
ABC Radio blew up The Edge to provide competition against the arrival of Howard Stern. And ABC won. Howard didn't last very long.
That's standard radio practice. You call, the recording becomes their property, and sampling is OK.
God, I hate traditional media.

TURN YOUR CRANK... TO FRANK!
Oh man, I just watched that episode on Wednesday, too.
What say we impale Mike on The Point and then push Jack off The Edge?

Re: one-name wonders
Eighthed. We're even getting that shit in Canada: Ottawa now has a Bob FM where (the admittedly horrible) Kool FM used to be and Vancouver, bless it's damp and putrid heart, is stuck with a Jack. I don't know who they supplanted; I'm too afraid it might've been (the admittedly horrible) Z fm.
