Being completely exhausted, I was able to drift to sleep around 8:30 or so, avoiding the kitchen thumps two flights down by utilizing the time-honored technique of sticking my head in between two pillows and clutching them tightly around my ears. Around 11:00, however, the renovator dudes made it to the bedroom a floor directly below mine. There they began using a device which is presumably a power drill but I know better; it is actually an Electric Radial Honker because it turns the entire wooden frame of the house into one giant clown horn.
Were I to write this for an audio production, it would go something like this:
SFX A MUFFLED WHIRRING SOUND, AS IF A JET TURBINE IS BEING WARMED UP, QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY A VERY SHARP
SFX HONK!! (MAKE IT AS LOUD AND AS UPFRONT AS YOU CAN. I DON'T CARE IF IT GIVES HEART ATTACKS TO LISTENERS ON HEADPHONES, BUT COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISCOMFORT IS THE PRIMARY GOAL HERE.)
It is directly underneath my place of attempted sleep, and is continuing at this very moment accompanied with large thumps, slams, rhythmic hammering, and drill groans that now sound more like trombone glissandos than honks. I do not remember asking Blue Man Group to practice here today. Coming downstairs does not help things, as these ungodly sonic atrocities reverberate throughout the entire place. You can feel it in the floor, even.
Combined with the insomnia from last night, this has turned me into a very angry ball of sleep-deprived nerves completely lacking in the energy necessary to perform even the slightest acts of anything, which includes my plan of going out and buying some cat food so when the cat wakes up (how he's asleep is beyond me; the fellow could sleep through an alien invasion) he won't continue to keep me up with his incessant FOOD GOZ IN HEER reminders.
However, the fellows seem to have had enough fun for one day and are now tromping out the door to their truck. I hope they're driving away for good and not just for a lunch break. An attempt shall now be made to tromp upstairs and grab more sleep time. I hate days like this.
